| Saying Goodbye to a Friend |
Community Servings' Director of Operations, Christopher Muhammad, reflects on our agency's friendship with John Casserley: "It is with great sadness that we report that John Casserley has passed away. With 15+ inches of snow on the ground in the winter of 1998, and 8 foot snow drifts blocking our doors, I stood in the middle of Magazine Street (Community Servings first building) forcing John to stop. I told him we had hungry people to feed and that all of us that were able to shovel were exhausted. Without hesitation John went to work and cleared our parking lot and Magazine Street to Massachusetts Ave, the nearest main street that was plowed. From that point to the end of our last snow season John came religiously and cleared the way for us. Every year he would ask 'How many years have we delivered without missing a day?' I'd tell him and he would beam with pride and grin from ear to ear. He worked us in amongst his big clients and never charged a dime for anything he did. Last year cancer reduced him from a burley 270 lb man to a slight man of 155 lbs but he wouldn't quit until he couldn't go any more. His only request was for an occasional meal and some of that 'great soup' to take home. He will be sorely missed."
